What is Project Melanin Beauty?
PMB is a makeover video campaign in celebration of Black History month, to showcase and celebrate black beauty. To inspire and encourage black women and girls to embrace their beauty, distinct features and love the skin they're in.
Why I Started Project Melanin Beauty
I started Project melanin Beauty because I want to shed a positive light on black beauty. I want to break the mold on mainstream beauty and let women know that we can define it for ourselves.
My daughter struggled a bit with her identity. Surprisingly, she didn't know she was black? She said to me "No mommy, I'b brown". She didn't understand that being black wasn't just about skin colour but about her ethnicity and her race. She, like many other girls her age, struggled with their hair and she didn't like it very much.
She would say, "why is my hair so puffy? why doesn't it feel silky like my friends hair"? She wanted me to relax her hair with chemicals, so it can lay flat like her friends hair.
It was then we had a conversation about her hair and why it's different and why she should love her hair and be proud of the hair that God gave her.
I taught her the versatility of black hair and the many styles she can wear and now she loves it. She loves the fact that she could wear it straight, curly, or in a big afro and be beautiful! Not to mention she loves the attention she gets from her peers because they admire her hair; it's her crowning glory.
When I mentioned my story to other women, I found out that their daughters or young girls that they know also struggled with their identity, features and looks. At this point, I realized something needed to be done.
Sadly, imagery in the media paints black women in the worst light, In favor of sexualizing, discrediting and dismissing the contributions, leadership and community building black women have given to the world. From being considered ugly because of a darker complexion to being over sexualized; specifically those with a curvier body being used to fill the "video vixen" fantasy. Consistently being dismissed from school or fired from their place of work because their natural hair, or the issues surrounding colorism; from being pushed and encouraged to use lightening creams because their skin tone is considered dirty, too dark and unclean; or being overlooked by makeup companies that don't care to cater to darker skin tones.
Who decided that if your hair wasn't a certain way, or your makeup didn't look a certain way, or your body wasn't built a particular way , that you weren't considered beautiful? It's tie to embrace our own individual uniqueness and love the skin we are in; and we come in all shades. No matter if your skin is really light, dark or in between; it's beautiful, it's distinct, it's yours and you should love and celebrate it.
It's time that black women and young black girls can look in the media and see themselves being represented positively. To see other women that look like them being confident and embracing their beauty, embracing their hair, their skin tone, their features and representing for black women everywhere.
